Christchurch Toastmasters has been helping people develop public speaking and leadership skills for 57 years. Visit one of our weekly meetings and see for yourself how Toastmasters helps people build up their confidence!
On Tuesday 12 November 2024, we be supporting our club’s contestants in the Area D3 Humorous Speech and Evaluation contests. We will be back to our regular meeting schedule the following week.
On Tuesday 5 November 2024, we will be holding our annual International Speech Contest. Guests are welcome to attend. Please be aware that we will be starting at an earlier time of 7pm.
2025 is a special year for us, as it will mark 60 years since the forming of our club. As the fifth oldest club in New Zealand, there are few others that have reached this milestone!
To celebrate, we are going to hold an anniversary dinner on Tuesday 8 April at The Protocol Bar (2 Colombo Street), starting at 6:30pm. This will be a night of sharing memories, reconnecting with past members and listening to speeches about the history of the club.
We would love for any past members or guests to be there! If you can make it, please RSVP to christchurch@toastmasters.org.nz. Attendees will need to pay for their own drinks and meals.
Many people who join Toastmasters experience the same feelings of nervousness. Practice speaking in an environment where everyone supports each other.
Our Pathways learning programme will help you master body language, vocal variety, speech structure and stage presence.
Toastmasters is a great way to form new connections. By listening to the stories of fellow members and attending our social events, friendships will quickly form!
Each meeting is divided into three parts – prepared speeches, impromptu speeches and evaluations.
Prepared speeches are scheduled in advance and are typically 5 – 7 minutes in length. These speeches are part of the Toastmasters Pathways Learning Programme and allow members to practice a more formal style of speaking.
We practice impromptu speaking through a method called table topics. This is where participants are given random questions and try to speak on them for 1 – 1.30 minutes. This may sound daunting, but it is actually lots of fun and is a valuable skill for everyday life.
Everyone who speaks is evaluated. We do this in an encouraging way so that you can quickly understand your strengths and identify the next steps. This is one of the main benefits of coming to Toastmasters!
Want to see how Toastmasters can help you? Come along to one of our weekly meetings! It is 100% free to visit as a guest and there is no need to register your attendance beforehand. Don’t worry, there won’t be any pressure to speak on the first visit!
“Joining this club was one of the best decisions of my life! I was very apprehensive in the beginning and it took a few attempts to attend my first meeting, but once I walked through the door, everyone was very friendly and supportive.”

“Christchurch Toastmasters is a great environment for those who are looking for new challenges. I started as a way to improve my English and presentation skills, but now I am starting to realise that I can develop many other skills, such as listening with more attention, provide feedback, leadership and more.”
